On December 20, a solemn event dedicated to the opening of the Confucius Institute was held at the leading university in the region. It was attended by the leadership of the GSU, a delegation of the Nanking University of Science and Technology, the secretary of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Belarus, as well as representatives of metropolitan universities, which already have similar institutions.

“Today’s meeting is the result of many years of fruitful cooperation between the Belarusian and Chinese universities,” said Sergei Khakhomov, the rector of the GSU.

Confucius Institutes is a network of international cultural and educational centers established by the State Chancellery for the dissemination of Chinese language abroad.

In 2016, with the support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, a Confucius office was opened on the basis of the Gomel State University, where educational, scientific, cultural and educational activities are actively carried out.

At present, the International Chinese-Belarusian Research Laboratory on Vacuum-Plasma Technologies works productively, 37 young people from China study at the Gomel University, more than 120 Belarusian students study the language, culture and traditions of the Middle Kingdom.

- The opening of the Institute plays an important role in strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries. We follow the same path through which we will be able to reach new heights, ”said Mr. Fu Mening, head of the Chinese delegation, rector of Nanjing University.

Li Wenhua, secretary of the PRC Embassy in Belarus, recalled that every fifth inhabitant of the world knows Chinese or speaks it in the world and expressed hope that more and more students will be interested in learning it, thereby helping to strengthen the interconnections of Gomel and Chinese universities.
